From the late-1660s through the mid-19th century, the site was part of a burial ground associated with what was then the Reformed Low Dutch Church of Harlem. It contained the burials of people of African ancestry. The Harlem African Burial Ground was a segregated cemetery created in 1668 for the burial of enslaved and freed Africans in the Dutch colony of Harlem. The former 126th Street bus depot on Second Avenue in Manhattan was built atop a cemetery now known as the Harlem African Burial Ground.
